The 4th is stroke index 1 off the whites — 415 yards, and none of it kind. The 1st is a par three, so there is no gentle way into the round.

The clubhouse sits top left. The round works its way out across the Common, drops into the trees through the middle, and climbs back up to finish beside where you started.
Local rules, and what to wear.
The club’s local rules, as updated on 7 March 2024. Check the clubhouse noticeboard for anything temporary in force on the day.
Dress code
Members must ensure that their guests are appropriately dressed before playing. Vests, t-shirts, jeans, tracksuits, beach shorts and trainers or flip flops are not permitted on the course.
1. Immovable obstructions
Free relief is allowed under Rule 16.1: a ball may be lifted and dropped within one club-length of the nearest point of full relief, and not nearer the hole.
- All constructed paths, winter tees, sprinkler heads, yardage markers, direction posts, bells, fixed benches and bins are treated as immovable obstructions.
- A ball striking the marker posts on holes 2 and 3 may be replayed, without penalty.
- Relief may be taken for line of sight if the marker post on holes 2 and 3 is within three club-lengths of the ball and intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole.
2. No-play zones and ground under repair
- In areas marked NPZ (grey stakes), and for all staked trees, free relief must be taken under Rule 16.1.
- In areas marked GUR (blue stakes, or a white line around an area), free relief may be taken under Rule 16.1.
- Ground under repair includes exposed rocks in the general area of the course, from which free relief is allowed under Rule 16.1.
3. Preferred lies
When preferred lies are in operation — indicated by the noticeboard on the 1st tee — a ball in areas cut to fairway height or less may be lifted, cleaned and replaced without penalty. Mark the spot before lifting, and replace the ball within a scorecard’s distance of the original spot.
4. Call-up holes
The 6th is a call-up hole. On reaching the plateau, players should stand aside and invite the group behind to tee off.
5. Club competitions
All club competitions and team matches have priority on the course, and all competitions start on hole 1.
6. Hole priority
Players on higher-numbered holes have priority where fairways cross. Players who start out on the course have no priority on the 1st tee — priority is given to times booked off the 1st tee.
7. Practising on the course
Practising on the 1st and 18th greens is not allowed.
